The department of economics of the institute began its activities in the early post-war years. It was established for the purpose of scientific research on the economics of oil crops in the Soviet Union. The first head of the department was Dr. Alexander Ivanovich Konyukov.

As a result of the internal reorganization of the institute in 1995, the department of economics ceased its activities. In 1998, the laboratory of economics was established. It was headed by Viktor Pavlovich Brazhnik, PhD in economics.

At present, the small team of the laboratory is engaged in the development of organizational and economic measures to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of oil crops cultivation, performing economic analysis of the state of oil raw materials production in various regions of Russia in today’s conditions to prepare proposals on increasing production taking into account rational placement and concentration of sowings.

In addition, in cooperation with the scientific departments of the institute, work is carried out to evaluate the economic efficiency of new resource-saving technological methods of cultivation of oil crops.
