Laboratory of rapeseed hybrid breeding

Focus area of the laboratory

The work of the laboratory is aimed at developing highly productive hybrids of winter rapeseed with ecological plasticity and a complex of economically important traits using modern breeding methods. The most convenient and technologically advanced method for obtaining rapeseed hybrids on an industrial scale is the use of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) and fertility restorer (Rf) genes. The laboratory carries out the following tasks:

— identification of lines with a high combining ability to develop their sterile counterparts and fertility restorer lines;

— evaluation of interlinear hybrids based on Ogura CMS by the set of economically important traits;

— solving the problem of combining yield potential with ecological adaptability, on which the release and distribution of the hybrid in production depends.

Laboratory results for 2019-2022

— the effect of Ogura CMS on economic characters of winter rapeseed was studied, lines with high combining ability were identified to develop their sterile analogs and fertility restorer lines, interlinear hybrids based on Ogura CMS were evaluated by the complex of economically important traits;

— the method of selecting self-pollinated plants based on biological characteristics of rapeseed pollination was developed and improved. This breeding method serves as a technology for concentrating positive hereditary factors in a biotype and obtaining pure rapeseed lines as a starting point for heterosis breeding;

— constant inbred lines of winter rapeseed were developed. It was found that inbred depression does not exceed 3-15% in terms of seed yield. Transfer of lines to sterile cytoplasm has no negative consequences. A number of experimental hybrids have been developed with yields 23-48% higher than the standard variety Loris;

— the degree of phenotypic dominance and heterosis effect in interlinear hybrids of winter rapeseed was determined by economically important traits;

— experimental data were obtained, indicating significant differences between maternal and paternal lines in both general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining ability;

— in 2020, the first domestic simple interlinear hybrid of winter rapeseed Debut was developed and submitted to the State trial.
