The history of domestic sunflower breeding is closely connected with the name of the outstanding breeder academician V. S. Pustovoit, currently, the Federal Scientific Center for Oil Crops is named after him.

V. S. Pustovoit first began the scientific breeding of sunflower varieties in 1912. He developed an effective method of breeding variety populations that made it possible to develop new varieties with high oil content, yield, and resistance to the main pathogens.

V. S. Pustovoit has developed a method of improving seed breeding of varieties, which makes it possible not only to preserve the quality characteristics of varieties during reproduction but also to improve them.

At Institute, for the first time in the world, G. V. Pustovoit managed to develop varieties with complex resistance to pathogens by interspecific hybridization of cultivated sunflower with the wild species H. tuberosus.

The history of domestic sunflower breeding is linked directly to the protection of the crop from diseases, pests, and broomrape. Today, we own and apply in breeding practice methods of genetic control over resistance to new races of broomrape and new pathogens.

The development of large-seeded sunflower varieties at the Institute prompted the development of a whole sector in the food industry for the use of seeds for confectionery purposes.

The Institute also developed special varieties with a high content of oleic acid in the oil and resistance to the hydrolytic decomposition of the oil.

Over the years of the Institute’s activity, 199 sunflower varieties with a complex of economically important traits have been developed. As of 2018, 39 varieties of the Institute’s breeding were included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation.
