Research on the biological method of pest and disease control in VNIIMK began in 1975 in the Plant Protection Department with the development of a set of biological control measures against major pests of oil crops grown in greenhouses in order to accelerate the breeding process.

This work was carried out by L. V. Maslienko. As a result of the research, the system of biological control of spider mite and greenhouse whitefly on soybean and sunflower was developed using the predatory mite Phytoseiulus and a specialized parasite of greenhouse whitefly — Encarsia.

In 1993, the laboratory of biological control for plant protection, later renamed into the biomethod laboratory, was organized.

The main objective of the research is to solve theoretical and practical problems related to the development of effective, environmentally safe biological methods to reduce the harmfulness of the main pathogens of sunflower and other oil crops.

Identification, screening, and breeding improvement of promising antagonist strains of the most dangerous diseases of sunflower, soybean, rapeseed, and flax are carried out to develop microbiopreparations of multifunctional type of action.

The technology of production of high-tech microbiopreparations with long storage period (at least one year, at 25° C), without titer decrease (CFU/g) in combination with low application rates and cost per hectare norm, and also with high biological efficiency and environmental safety, based on one or more producer strains of fungal and bacterial nature for protection of agricultural and forest crops from pests, diseases and weeds is being developed.

The technology of application of microbiopreparations for protection of soil, seeds, vegetative oil plants and other agricultural crops is being developed. The possibility of restoring and activating natural regulatory mechanisms in agrocenoses is being established. In recent years the laboratory has developed biopreparations Vermiculen, Chetomin, Bacillin, Verrukozin, and Funiculosum.

The laboratory has developed biologically active compositions that include microbiopreparations for protection of seeds, seedlings and vegetative plants at early stages of sunflower development against major diseases, as well as a microbiopreparation for protection against wireworms anda sticking agent. The compositions are highly effective, environmentally friendly and have a growth-stimulating effect, ensuring the accumulation of beneficial microflora in the soil and increasing yield from 0.2 to 0.4 t/ha.
